A Sustainable Solution with Community Impact

Roque & Mark recently spearheaded a project that turned a routine maintenance issue into a meaningful opportunity to give back. When several bicycles were left behind at one of our managed properties, the team recognized the chance to make a positive impact. Instead of discarding them, Roque & Mark organized a donation effort, ensuring the bikes found a new home and a second life. The result was a true win-win, allowing us to responsibly clear space while supporting a charitable mission and reducing waste.

The bicycles were donated to Bicycle Angels, a nonprofit originally launched in December 2009 by three Team in Training cycle leaders. At the time, they were coaching participants to complete 100-mile fundraising rides benefiting the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Many riders were first-time endurance athletes who were motivated to raise money for important causes but lacked the proper road bikes needed to train and ride safely. Some attempted to prepare on heavy cruisers or city bikes, while others considered dropping out because they could not afford the investment in specialized equipment.

The founders of Bicycle Angels saw both a problem and a possibility. Starting with just four loaner bikes, they formed an organization, built a volunteer network, and began lending bicycles to help participants stay committed to their fundraising goals. The model proved successful. Riders achieved personal milestones, charities benefited from increased participation and donations, and new cyclists were introduced to the sport in a supportive environment.

The concept quickly gained momentum. Bicycle Angels began expanding nationally in 2013. At its height, the organization maintained more than 320 road bikes across multiple states and supported over 3,000 loan recipients, collectively helping to raise over $6 million for charitable causes. Beneficiaries over the years included the National MS Society, AIDS/LifeCycle, Best Buddies, and many others.

We value our longstanding connection to Bicycle Angels, which was led by one of our trusted vendors, David Gold. It was especially meaningful for our team to help facilitate this donation and support an organization whose mission reflects our shared commitment to sustainability and community engagement.

This project reflects Roque & Mark’s broader commitment to thoughtful management and community partnership. By finding sustainable solutions and supporting organizations that make a difference, we aim to ensure that even everyday property challenges can become opportunities to create positive change.
