Celebrating Independence Day, Santa Monica Style

Few traditions capture the spirit of Santa Monica quite like the annual Fourth of July Parade. Every year, neighbors line Main Street dressed in red, white, and blue, ready to celebrate as a community. Now in its 19th year, this beloved tradition returns with exciting changes, new festivities, and several major milestones to celebrate.

This year, the parade will follow a new route, reversing its traditional direction for only the second time in its history. The parade will begin at Marine Street and travel north along Main Street, ending at Pico Boulevard. Festivities officially begin at 9:30 AM on Saturday, July 4.

The route adjustment was made to better connect the parade with a new post-parade celebration, Pulse in the Park, taking place at Tongva Park from 11:30 AM to 3 PM. The free festival will feature live music, food vendors, pop-up shops, family-friendly activities, and a beer garden, giving residents even more opportunities to celebrate together after the parade concludes.

This year’s celebration carries added significance, as Santa Monica marks multiple historic anniversaries.

In 2026, the city joins the nation in celebrating America’s 250th birthday while also honoring the 100th anniversary of Route 66. As the western end of the iconic highway, Santa Monica occupies a special place in Route 66 history, making this year’s festivities particularly meaningful for both locals and visitors.

The parade is presented by the Ocean Park Association, a resident-led community group dedicated to preserving and improving quality of life in Ocean Park. The organization describes its mission simply: supporting the neighborhood’s voice and strengthening the community that makes Santa Monica special. That spirit has defined the parade since its founding.

The event was co-founded in 2007 by longtime Santa Monica resident Jeff Jarow, who also helped establish the Ocean Park Association. What began as a simple idea among patriotic neighbors quickly became one of the city’s most cherished annual traditions. Jarow has spent decades serving Santa Monica through civic leadership, including work with the Main Street Business Improvement District, the Ocean Park Boulevard Beautification Project, the Santa Monica Chamber of Commerce, and the Santa Monica Pier Corporation. His dedication to the community has helped shape not just the parade, but many of the public spaces and neighborhood initiatives residents enjoy today.

At Roque & Mark we know that what makes Santa Monica exceptional extends far beyond its coastal views, it is the people and traditions that create a true sense of belonging.

Events like the Fourth of July Parade remind us why community matters. For a few hours, Main Street becomes a shared gathering place where neighbors reconnect, local organizations shine, and Santa Monica celebrates what makes it feel like home.
